A Spirit Creature was a 5 piece multimedia endeavor shown @ MMFC in Menomonie WI in 2017. For this show I created animal inspired textiles with all the animals being chosen by the muses. They were goat, swan, butterfly, koala and jellyfish. Designed to be both wearable and hung as fine art I stitched, painted, hand dyed, knot tied, welt felted, crocheted, needle felted, finger wove, embroidered, beaded, wrote and worked on photo shoots for a total of several hundred hours. A poem in Haiku format in celebration of each muse was written for each piece.
Displayed as wall mounted art with the poems alongside a photo of the piece being worn, they were intended to capture the feel, shape and the spirit of each muse and their chosen animal. Both on the wearer and the wall. The entire process was one giant healing prayer in celebration of interconnectedness, community, and the power of womxn. Sara swan, Nina koala, Lizzle butterfly, Erin goat and Kaia (myself) jellyfish.
Special thanks to the collaborative talent of Lizzle K Ivry and Teresa Jo Kruger who took the photos of the pieces being worn.
